Dr. Mehmet Toner Elected to Prestigious National Academy of Engineering

Image Turkish American Dr. Mehmet Toner was elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) at the beginning of February 2017. Dr. Toner is a Professor of Health Sciences at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology and the Helen Andrus Benedict Professor of Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was elected for engineering novel microelectromechanical and microfluidic point-of-care devices that improve detection of cancer, prenatal genetic defects, and infectious disease.

Ozmen Ventures Launches $5 Million Fund to Spark Local Entrepreneurial Ecosystem

Image Ozmen Ventures has announced its launch as one of the first early-stage investment funds in northern Nevada. Founded by Eren and Fatih Ozmen, owners of Sparks-based Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC), a global aerospace and defense company, the fund aims to invest in young and dynamic local startups and cultivate the local entrepreneurial ecosystem. Ozmen Ventures is a seed and early-stage venture capital fund headquartered in Reno. The fund has already made an investment in ClickBio, an innovator in the laboratory consumables industry.

NYPD Is Here for Immigrants

Image The NYPD announced that they are not going to inquire about the immigration status of crime victims, witnesses, or others who call or approach the police seeking assistance. The countries largerst police department says its press release: "The NYPD does not conduct civil immigration enforcement." 


Royal Caribbean Latest Cruise Line to Cancel Turkey Ports of Call

Image Royal Caribbean has canceled all scheduled stops in Turkey for the 2017 season, becoming the latest cruise line to do so following Carnival Corporation’s Cunard Line and P&O Cruises December decisions to stop sailing to the Mediteranean nation. Disney Cruise Line, Crystal Cruises and MSC Cruises are among other cruise lines that cancelled all ports of call to Turkey in 2016. Royal Caribbean says it made the decision due to the current unpredictability of events happening in the country, and that they are keeping  the safety and wellbeing of both guests and crew members in mind after numerous terrorist attacks in the country in last year.

Turkish Dramas Focus of Interest in Latin America

Image Turkey has exceeded $100,000 million in return from Turkish TV drama exports in recent years, and is now getting ready to collaborate with Latin American countries to enhance the industry, daily Hürriyet has reported. The Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEİK) has been in efforts to mobilize and increase the contribution of Turkish dramas to tourism and trade. “Projects with Latin American countries will contribute both to Turkey’s promotion and create a warm environment to increase trade,” said Aykut Eken, the chairman of DEİK Turkish-American Business Council.

To Detect Prying Eyes in the sky, Dedrone Raises $15 million

Image For better or worse, drones are about to become a lot more prevalent in US airspace. The FAA expects sales of drones to spike domestically from 2.5 million last year to 7 million by 2020. Now, a startup that detects drones and helps prevent unwanted aerial intrusions, Dedrone, has closed a $15 million Series B round of venture funding. Investors in San Francisco-based Dedrone included Cisco Executive Chairman John Chambers, and Felicis Ventures, which led the round. The founder and Managing Director of Felicis Ventures, Aydin Senkut, said the deal represents the largest check his firm has cut in a single round to-date.

Chobani Named One of the Most innovative Companies in the World

Image Yogurt maker Chobani Inc. has been named one of the most innovative companies in the world. Business magazine Fast Company ranked the upstate New York food manufacturer the ninth most innovative company for 2017, ahead of Spotify, Buzzfeed and Airbnb, as well as Microsoft and IBM. Among other things, Fast Company cited Chobani's 2016 ad campaigns that targeted competitors General Mills and Dannon and the introduction of its Mezé Dips product line as reasons for its high ranking.

Hate Crime Education, Awareness and Response Seminar

Staten Island District Attorney Michael McMahon,NYPD  Chief Donna Jones, NYPD Deputy Chief- Inspector Mark Magrone, NYPD Hate Crime Task Force Inspector Bob Bocchino, 120 Precinct Commanding Officer Lieutenant Rafet Awad and  NYPD Outreach Unit Officers of  Staten Island. Imam Kukac who is the one of the well-known Albanian Community arranged the seminar for the all Community Leaders.He is also very active at NYPD Community Outreach Programs. During the Seminar, Law Enforcement Officers talked about the strong engagement and coordination with the Ethnic Communities in New York on many issues including Hate Crime.

New Walmart Concept Store Brings Chobani Cafe Out of New York

Image A new Walmart concept store is coming to South Texas, and with it—a new partnership with yogurt-maker Chobani. The “smart” store, set to open at the end of February in Houston, Texas suburb of Tomball, will reportedly feature innovative new approaches to technology, services, products, and layout. According to local news source The Houston Chronicle, these innovations will include Walmart’s Mobile Scan & Go program, through which shoppers can streamline the checkout process using an app to checkout.

From New Haven To Turkey, With Layers

As she mourned her adopted country’s turn away from a world humanitarian crisis, Vietnamese refugee Trinh Truony found a reason to maintain hope — with the help of eight stuffed suitcases from New Haven. She and her classmate Hacibey Catalbasoglu delivered 200 winter coats, plus sweaters and boots, to Syrians living in a Turkish refugee camp after fleeing their country’s civil war. Now they’re back studying at Yale — and just getting started harnessing citizen power to counteract new efforts by the U.S. government — and others around the world — to close doors and hearts to millions fleeing mass slaughter.
