Image Dr. Ayse Gurses, a native of Turkey and a human factors engineer here at the Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality recently received an award from the Federation of Associations of Behavioral & Brain Sciences (FABBS). Dr. Gurses received the Early Career Investigator Award for her work to improve the safety of patients who undergo heart surgery.

This is not to suggest that South Africa is a more important market than the U.S. Obviously, with a population of about 50 million -- compared to more than 300 million here -- it's not. But at least South Africans can say they've been loyal to the BlackBerry brand: It still holds a 50% share of the smartphone market there, years after it fell off the radar screens of U.S. consumers.

ImageThe USAF for a second time has selected the A-29 for the LAS mission. In announcing the award, the Air Force stated "this award is the result of a full and open competition" and Lt. Gen. C.R. Davis, military deputy for acquisition in Air Force headquarters said, "I am confident that the source selection process was disciplined and meticulous." Even Beechcraft's CEO commented on the care and professionalism of the USAF's selection process. In fact, this was a completely new evaluation process, conducted by a new team and overseen by a three-star general.

ATAA Trustee Davut Okutcu visited the Turkish teams competing at the New York regionals at the Javitz arena. "The varsity Sport for the Mind," FRC combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It's as close to "real-world engineering" as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team.
