Deep blue waters and emerald-colored bays of summer, unforgettable nature walks of spring, and skiing on white snow as you watch one of the best sceneries in winter… All these can be experienced at Lake Tahoe, 180 miles from San Francisco, located near the Nevada-California border in northeastern California. Lake Tahoe is one of the largest and deepest lakes in North America. Its altitude is among the highest in the world. Its waters are so clear that during my first summer away from my beloved Izmir, they made me feel as if I were embraced by the Aegean blue.

It is widely argued that the lake owes this clarity to its sterile granite bed. On the mountains the breathtaking mountains around the lake, there are dozens of camping sites and trails for nature walks. Spring and summer are ideal for camping, but if you don’t fancy camping, there are cabins for rent or plenty of hotels for every budget. Most hotels in the Nevada side have casinos, too. The Harrah’s and Caesars hotel chains of Las Vegas are also here. Although they are not as monumental as their Las Vegas counterparts, these hotels are the home of entertainment until the early hours of morning, hosting various shows and concerts, especially on summer weekends.

LAKE TAHOE WINTERS ARE DIFFERENT!
Since the first snow of the year has already fallen onto Tahoe as I am writing these words, I’d better stop talking about the springs and summers of the region and tell you about its winter charm. Whether you like to ski or not, you will definitely have a good time in Lake Tahoe in winter. My recommendation, especially if you are traveling with a group of friends, is to rent a cabin around the lake.

These cabins have every convenience and luxury that is needed to make you feel at home. There’s nothing like sipping a drink in the outdoor hot tub when it’s snowing. Cabins are not only more fun for large groups, they are also much more affordable than hotels. If you still prefer to stay in a hotel, you will definitely find one that fits your budget. If you plan to visit the area in a peak season, such as Thanksgiving, New Year’s Eve or a long weekend, you will need to book your reservation in advance.

Lake Tahoe is a paradise for skiers, snowboarders and cross-country skiers. There are 16 skiing facilities around the lake. Sugar Bowl, North Star, Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows are among the most popular ones in North Lake Tahoe. In the south, Heavenly and Sierra at Tahoe are popular. There is nothing like skiing in front of the breathtaking lake scenery.

If you are not into skiing, that doesn’t mean that you will not enjoy the beauty of the region. Almost all the facilities have cafes located near the mountaintops which you can reach by cable cars. There are many activities to choose from, including nature walks in summer and snowmobiling in winter. You can even tour the valley in hot air balloons, try your luck in a casino, or sail on an old fashioned glass-bottomed boat.

Although there’s much more to say about Lake Tahoe, I know that a picture is worth a thousand words. I hope you get a chance to see the beautiful scenery with your own eyes, and I definitely recommend you stop by Lake Tahoe if you plan to visit California this winter. Greetings from San Francisco!
